Why the gut health is so important
Most of us are eating processed foods, grains and dairy on a regular basis. We are doing this since we grew up, and never had any problems with it. This is the cause why we don´t understand that this kind of eating behaviour leads to autoimmune disease - we had no problem with it for decades. The truth is, the food you get today isn´t comparable with the food you got 30, 40 or 50 years ago. I call it "fake food", because it is full of chemical additives and low in nutrients. Most people in our western world live off these products every day. The nutrient density is declining each year, while the chemical additives are on the rise. Not only is your body not getting enough nutrients to sustain a healthy state, no, you are damaging it, and especially your gut, with all the chemical additives and particularly with gluten. Gluten is the main driver for damaging your gut and leading to autoimmune disease. The standard american diet has gluten in EVERY meal of the day. It is contained in every grain you are eating, or processed food which contains grain.
Once your gut is damaged by all the fake food and gluten you are eating, you are in a state of having a "leaky gut". A leaky gut means having a increased intestinal permeability, and this is where autoimmune disorders begin to develop. The reason for that is, that all the gluten and fake food you are eating causes your gut cells to release a protein called "zonulin", which breaks apart tight junctions in your intestinal lining. Once this lining is damaged, undigested food, in form of particles, microbes and toxins gets into your bloodstream and travels through your body. Your immune system recognizes that and produces antibodys for each of the invaders. With the next meal, all these things happen again, and again, and again. Furthermore your intestinal lining gets damaged even more, and the problem develops exponentially. Because you are eating unhealty food low in nutrients, it is just a matter of time, till your immune system can´t handle the extreme load of toxins and other undigested food anymore, and gets irritated. And so almost all forms of autoimmune disease develops.
Do i have a leaky gut?
I have created a list with typical symptoms which indicate a leaky gut:
- You have skin issues like eczema or acne, especially after eating
- You feel tired and drowsy after eating and got "brain fog"
- You are depressive, your mood declines and you don´t know why
- You have chronic fatique, muscle or joint pain
- You have asthma, food intolerances or allergies
- You have irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, gas or diarrhea
But before we talk about reversing autoimmune diseases and go more into detail, we first have to fix our gut and break the toxic cycle we are in. A very informative, and especially cheap book i can recommend for that is called Fix Your Gut
